Green Tips for You and Baby

Since most babies spend an average of 16 – 17 hours per day in a nursery (or bedroom), that is an important place to eliminate and reduce toxins. Reducing your baby’s exposure to toxic chemicals is the most important thing you can do when designing your baby’s bedroom.
- Paint the room with new water-based low-volatile organic compound paints. If you are pregnant, have someone else paint for you.
- Painting should be done at least one month before your baby is due.
- Consider replacing wall-to-wall carpet which traps pollutants, mold and dust mites which may trigger allergies and asthma. Natural linoleum is a good alternative as are hardwood floors from sustainable managed forests and finished with a non-toxic sealer.
- A baby spends almost half of the day asleep, so make sure the crib is as pure as possible in every way. All-natural, untreated wool mattresses are a healthier alternative, but often more expensive. If you do purchase a mattress made with synthetic materials, place it outside to outgas for at least one month before bringing it into the nursery.
- For the crib, and other furniture, choose real wood, natural finishes, wicker or rattan. Avoid MDF (medium-density fiberboard), plywood and particleboard, which often contain formaldehyde. Used furniture, more than a few years old, has likely outgased the majority of its harmful chemicals, so buying or borrowing used furniture is a practical option.
- Choose natural cloth and wood toys. Plastic is a major contributor to indoor air pollution and so many toys today are made from plastic.
- Keep your nursery safe by using only nontoxic and natural cleaning products and pest controls.
Your baby will appreciate all that you do to keep his world safe & healthy.
